Sam parked in front of Callie’s house. The light was dimming, but people could see his mother’s black Jeep easily. It felt odd having a platinum album and still driving his mother’s car, but that was how family worked. He and Rick had driven together from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. Since Rick’s mom needed her car for work, Rick kept the rental and Sam used his mom’s car. It didn’t make sense to spend money on another rental when he’d be here for less than a week.

At his heart, he had the Midwestern frugality. Rick, too. In this business, it’s what had gotten them this far.

On the charts.

And here. To Callie’s house.

He grabbed the square, flat, great-smelling box from the passenger seat then headed toward Callie’s house, excitement simmering inside him.

Yesterday, he’d parked in the back. Like a thief. Then he’d come in through the back door. Like a sneak. Yesterday, he was a guy who’d come to get lucky.

Today, he wanted more.

The door opened, and she beamed at him.

It felt like the sun was shining down on him instead of the first beams from the moon. He grinned back at her.

“Do you remember our first date?” he asked.

“On the playground? You wanted me to watch your athletic prowess?”

“And you did. I was like a chimpanzee, showing off for the lady chimpanzee.”

“You should put that in your next record. I’m sure your female fans would love to be compared to lady chimpanzees as much I do.”

“Good idea. I’ll run it by the band.” He grinned. He felt alive-plus with her. As if extra brain cells were firing and his skin had thinned, so he felt every breath she exhaled and every move she made.

He held up the box. “Offerings for a goddess.”

She stepped back, and he stepped inside. “It’s only goddess material if it has extra olives and mushrooms,” she said.

“It does. My dad said it’s your favorite.” He handed her the pizza then took off his jacket and grimaced. “It’s weird that my father knows more about my girlfriend than I do.”

Hanging up his jacket in the hall closet, he felt silence behind him. No movement, no talk, nothing.

He turned around slowly, not knowing what he’d said that changed the atmosphere. This boy-girl stuff had been easier when he was four. You invited a girl to see you perform on the playground equipment at recess. And if you really liked her at lunch, you gave her one of the two cookies your mom put in your backpack. And if she liked you, she gave you her apple.

Now it was more complicated. And he meant right now, because right now was when he was looking at her, and she wasn’t smiling, she wasn’t frowning. She just stood in the small front hall as if she’d been frozen, her eyes wide, her eyebrows raised.

“Girlfriend?” she asked.

“I’m not sure what you’d call us.” He frowned. “We matter. It’s not just about sex.”

“It’s not?” She blinked. “I guess that’s good. Considering I’m not that great in bed, I’m glad that it’s not just sex.
